A non standard poker hand is simply a poker hand that can be formed based on certain house rules. While these hands may not be officially accepted by the governing poker rules, they can be made depending on the house rules of a certain poker room or house tournament. It is quite typical for non standard hands to come out in a game where there are wild cards or bugs.
These non traditional poker hands are also sometimes referred to as special hands or freak hands. The components and ranking of these special poker hands can change or vary depending on the house rules that have been set by a certain poker room or tournament. Therefore, it is important that you ask about house rules before you sit down on any poker table.
The most common freak hands include the five of a kind - wherein you have five cards of the same rank and this requires the presence of wild cards, the Canadian straight - wherein you have three pairs, the flash - wherein you have one card from each suit plus a joker card, the bobtail straight or four to the straight - wherein you have a series of four cards in sequential order, and the big bobtail - wherein you have a four-card straight flush and the fifth card is irrelevant.
